Australian Production Design Guild awards announced
The Australian Production Design Guild (APDG) has held it’s annual award ceremony, and big winners included The Lost Flowers of Alice Heart, Talk To Me and The Portable Door.
For the first time the Awards ceremony was held in Meanjin, Brisbane at the State Library of Queensland on Saturday 24th August 2024. The awards were attended by over 160 people in person, and many more via the live stream.
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart received 3 awards out of their 6 nominations, with Melinda Doring for Production Design TV, Anthea Hodge, Ian Gracie APDG and Mandi Bialek-Wester for Art Direction TV, Paul Sarpi for Set Decoration TV. Matt Putland APDG won the Production Design for a Feature Film Award for their work on The Portable Door.
The Costume Design for a Television Production Award went to Gypsy Taylor for Our Flag Means Death and the Costume Design for a Feature Film Award went to Steph Hooke for Late Night With The Devil. Meanwhile, Rebecca Buratto, Paul Katte and Nick Nicolaou took out the Make-Up, Prosthetic Make-Up or Hair Design Award for their work on Talk to Me, and The Production Design or Costume Design for a Short Film, Music Video or Web Series Award was awarded to Joseph Tiernan for My Heart Calls For You.
Design for a Commercial Award was won by Damien Drew APDG for their work on EBAY - Everyone has a Thing. The Concept Art Award was won by Daniel J Burns for Star Trek Strange New Worlds (Season 2). The Graphic Design Award was won by Jacqui Schofield for The Artful Dodger.
The emerging design categories are consistently popular, as they give emerging designers an opportunity to share their work with the broader design community. Lufan Shi won the Emerging Designer for a Screen Production Award with their work on The Method.
One of the most anticipated awards for the night was the Outstanding Contribution to Design Award, which this year went to a Screen practitioner and was awarded to Jon Dowding, Production Designer. Jon’s work has spanned many genres from Mad Max to The Blue Lagoon.
