What to catch at BIFF 2022 this week!

The second week of the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) 2022 is here, and there’s plenty of incredible films to check out if you’re in town. Here are some of our picks to seek out!

The Banshees of Inisherin

One of our favourite films of the year. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, In Bruges) and direct from premiering at Venice and Toronto is an intense drama reuniting In Bruges actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

TAR

Another incredible must-see. From producer-writer-director Todd Field comes TÁR, starring Cate Blanchett (Carol, Blue Jasmine) as the iconic musician Lydia Tár.

Triangle of Sadness

Winner of the Palme d’Or Cannes 2022 this darkly satirical black comedy from Ruben Östlund (The Square) is outrageously funny and a direct attack on gender, class, privilege and the insta famous.

Transfusion

The debut feature from Australian actor Matt Nable and starring Sam Worthington (Avatar), Transfusion is a taut dramatic thriller about a father forced to make choices to protect his family after returning home from armed service.

The Blue Caftan

A poignant, moving story selected for Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and Toronto, featuring superb performances and an evocative setting.

She Said

Two-time Academy Award® nominee Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman, An Education) and Zoe Kazan (The Plot Against America limited series, The Big Sick) star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that helped propel the #Metoo movement, shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and altered American culture forever.

The Angels: Kicking Down The Door

This intimate and compelling documentary feature explores the tensions that tore a band apart and helped them produce such classic hits as Take a Long Line, Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again and No Secrets.

Mass

This extraordinary example of film making is an intimate four-character piece and anchored by incredible, magnetic actors.

Call Jane

Starring Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver, Call Jane presents the personal challenges of one woman, amongst so many, in late 1960’s USA and prior to the landmark ruling of Roe v Wade. This insightful drama is timely and relevant and anchored by powerhouse central performances.

Black Site

Starring Michelle Monaghan (Mission Impossible – Fallout), Jason Clarke (Everest) and Jai Courtney (Divergent), Black Site is the debut feature from director Sophia Banks.

Broker

Broker is led by Song Kang-ho (Parasite) in a Cannes award winning role and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters). Part road trip, part dramatic thriller, Broker follows the unlikely journey of an abandoned baby and an unconventional family.

BIFF runs from 27 October to 6 November 2022 at a range of cinemas across Brisbane, including Reading Cinemas Newmarket, Five Star Cinemas New Farm Cinemas and Elizabeth Picture Theatre, Dendy Coorparoo and Dendy Portside, and the Brisbane Powerhouse.
